​The World Judo championship: results and prospects

A week of main international Judo contests – the World championship, which was taking place on the «Maracanãzinho Arena» sport complex area in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) from August, 26 to September, 1, came to an end. 776 judokas from 124 countries met to detect the strongest ones. On the whole, there were drawn 14 medal sets in different competitions and 2 medal sets in team events. Since team event are wanted to be recommended for inclusion in the Olympic Games program in 2016, new refereeing rules were tested at the last championship in Brazil.

Kazakhstani team was represented by the following judokas:

Man team:

10) Ertugan Torenov (73 kg)

Woman team:

1) Aygul Baykuleva (48 kg)

2) Aleksandra Podryadova (48 kg)

3) Lenariya Mingazova (52 kg)

4) Dinara Kudarova (70 kg)

5) Anar Seytimova (up to 78 kg)

6) Gulzhan Isanova (more than 78 kg)

First day, on August, 26, men appeared in the weight class up to 60 kg, women – up to 48 kg. Our country was represented by Askhat Telmanov (60 kg), Eldos Smetov (60 kg), Aygul Baykuleva (48 kg) and Aleksandra Podryadova (48 kg).

Unfortunately, neither men nor women could pass the qualifying rounds. As a result, Eldos Smetov and Askhat Telmanov took the seventh line of total rating in their weight class.

Next day, on August, 27, a striking event for the entire Kazakhstan and especially Judo world took place – Kazakhstani sportsman Azamat Mukanov won the silver medal in the weight class up to 66 kg.

Azamat Mukanov is the fifth Kazakhstani judoka, who won the medal at the World championship. The first ones were Askhat Zhitkeev and Askhat Shakharov in 2001, who won the “bronze” in Munich. Maksim Rakov became the first and for the present time the only world champion from Kazakhstan at the World championship in Rotterdam, 2009, he also took the silver medal in Paris in 2011.

There was the only sportsman from our country, who competed on August, 28 – Dastan Ykybaev in the weight class up to 73 kg. Totally, Dastan took the fifth line of the rating.

Thus, Kazakhstani team finished individual contests with four places in TOP-7 in individual event, including the “silver”. Azamat Mukanov won it in the weight class up to 66 kg. Dastan Ykybaev took the fifth rating line in the weight of 73 kg, Eldos Smetov and Askhat Telmanov took the seventh place in the weight up to 60 kg.

Team events took place on September, 1, where Kazakhstani team also didn’t manage to reach final fights.

As a result, Kazakhstani Judo team takes the 14’Th line in total event at the World Judo championship 2013.

The next city, which will gather the best World judokas in 2015, is Chelyabinsk. Its representatives have already got contests flag right after the championship finish.
